Zardia

Research into new technology

Chrissie is convinced that choreography and dance will be transformed by advanced technologies. Her research into the sciences behind the motion capture process confirms it.

ArtsWA funded a 3-year Research Fellowship allowing continuous investigation into Motion Capture Technology, its implications and use in choreography and teaching. Working with Medialab Paris and PsychoGraphics Perth, Chrissie created her virtual dancer Zardia.

A real dancer (Claudia Alessi) wearing a wireless motion-tracking rig performed choreographic phrases, instantly captured by computer. This character, existing solely in virtual space, is a tiny glimpse into the potential of these exciting technologies.

Song of Virtual Love
Ode to Zardia

"Somewhere in the dark net
your voice speaks to me
surrounded by empty digital silence
absent eyes moving nervously over the pixelated sea
murmurs ruggedly? digitised signals
from your eternal recording angel...
the murmuring binary beat of your heart
encased in its own cold net."

Lindsay Vickery.
